Client Consultation and Preparation
A professional consultation must be completed before every spray tan treatment.

The course also covers contraindications, patch testing requirements and correct client preparation before treatment.
Tanning Solutions and Shade Selection
Spray tanning solutions are available in different strengths and undertones.
You will learn how to consider the client’s natural skin tone, desired result, previous tanning experience, available development time and chosen product range when selecting an appropriate tanning solution.
You will also learn why a higher DHA percentage does not always produce a better result and why realistic shade selection is important.
Spray Tan Equipment and Machine Setup
The course covers the professional equipment required to carry out spray tan treatments, including the spray tanning machine, spray gun, tanning tent, professional tanning solutions, ventilation and client disposables.
You will learn how to prepare and test the machine correctly before treatment and ensure the tanning mist is fine, even and controlled before application.
Positioning and Application
Correct positioning helps ensure the tanning solution reaches each area evenly and reduces the risk of pale patches, creases and product build up.
You will learn a full body positioning sequence covering:
- Front of the body
- Right and left sides
- Back of the body
- Inner legs
- Hands and feet
- Face and neck
- Finishing checks
You will also learn how to maintain the correct spray gun distance, use smooth controlled movements, slightly overlap each spray line and apply less product to areas that absorb colour easily.
Aftercare and Troubleshooting
You will learn how to provide appropriate aftercare advice to support an even developing and longer lasting tan.
The course also covers common problems including:
- Patchy results
- Dark elbows and knees
- Dark hands and feet
- Pale areas
- Streaks and runs
- Orange appearance
- Uneven fading
- A tan that develops too lightly
